Nestled between the magnificent Cairngorms and mystical Monadhliath Mountains is Newtonmore, a Scottish Highland village with plenty of places to eat and shop, as well as lots of attractions and activities to suit all ages and abilities.

Newtonmore is built just above the flood plain of the River Spey and is located in Britain's largest National Park. It is home to the Clan Macpherson and the hit TV series Monarch of the Glen that was filmed on the nearby Ardverikie Estate.

For family fun take part in the Wildcat Experience that is located around the village. More than 100 models of the Scottish Wildcat can be seen around the village, including those in gardens, on roofs and up trees. Of the 130 currently hidden in the village there are a variety of designs, including a cat in pyjamas and Puss in Boots. Finding them all includes hours of fun searching in the glorious outdoors and can lead to prizes. For more information just visit the Wildcat Centre on Newtonmore's Main Street.

Fans of the hit BBC series Monarch of the Glen can relive fond memories of the show by taking a tour of the various locations used during its filming. They include Loch Laggan where you can photograph Ardverikie House, known in the show as Glenbogle, along with its Gatehouse that was the home of Hector and Molly in series two. The loch's sandy beach is also the largest freshwater beach in Britain. In Newtonmore, the Clan Macpherson Museum, which today looks back on the life of one of the last Jacobites, was used as the Glenbogle Tearooms and Post Office, while Mains Care Home was the hairdressers.

There are several wonderful places to find something to eat in the village of Newtonmore. The Ralia Café serves freshly made soup and sandwiches, and is a lovely warm place to enjoy lunch. Keepers Kitchen offers a wide range of traditional home cooked cakes, light breakfasts, lunch and afternoon teas, so is great for keeping all the family happy. A sit in or take away menu is available at the Tuck Shop, which was the original café on Newtonmore's Main Street, while The Glen Hotel has a lounge bar and dining room where you can savour some its excellent food. Other places to eat include The Braeriach and Garden Café.

Newtonmore is an excellent base for those wishing to explore the delights of the Highlands, with towns such as Kingussie, Aviemore, Fort William and Grantown on Spey only a short drive away.
